Statement:
In my newest series of paintings, I reinterpret
the landscape of the Northern Berkshires using
USGS “heightfield” data that is collected by
satellite with software. Certain familiar aspects
of the landscape are lost through this process,
including all trace of human construction and
population. This yields images that are
simultaneously familiar and other.
I proceed to paint multiple layers in acrylic,
sanding and scraping to alter the surface texture,
then burying these strata in several coats of
resin. Glazes of oil paint are applied to
the surface of the painting to smooth transitions
and bring about a pictorial uniformity. Finally I
polish the surface with beeswax. For me,
this process relates to the subject matter as an
analog to the geologic and planetary processes I
am depicting.
Other paintings in this series include
views of the great glacial Lake Bascom that
submerged the valleys of the Berkshires nearly
14,000 years ago as the glaciers retreated.
